Our Instructors

The teachers at Uncle Jon's Music are thoroughly trained, expert, professional and experienced performing musicians. Topics include theory and harmony, ear training, elements of style, improvisation, scales and technique, repertoire in a variety of genres, and more.

Jerome Allan - Guitar & Bass - Wednesday

Jerry received his 1st guitar as a Christmas present when he was just 2 years old.  By the age of 15, not only was he playing numerous venues in the Chicagoland area, but he had also begun teaching guitar and bass to his fellow classmates.  Since that time he has played with countless musicians (including Buddy Miles, Piano C Red, and Steve Vai) on stages reaching across the USA.  He has also worked as a session musician, cutting guitar and bass tracks for a variety of projects in local recording studios.  Although he says his roots are in rock guitar, he is also a Louis Armstrong Jazz Award recipient, has studied classical guitar at Depaul University, and really loves jamming the blues at Buddy Guy's Legends.

William Carroll - Guitar, Bass, Ukulele, Banjo, Mandolin - Tuesday evenings

Jim Hirsman - Guitar & Bass - Monday

Jon Kostal - Saxophone, Flute, Clarinet, Ukulele, Accordion Monday - Saturday
Jon Kostal, Jr. received his Masters and Bachelors degree in music at Eastern Illinois University. He grew up in Westmont, attending Westmont High, Jr. High, and Manning School. He has always been involved in music and the arts. Since attending EIU, Jon has taught private lessons, classes and workshops in numerous instruments. He has performed and led many musical groups including Ice Cream Vendors and The Astronauts. He currently plays in The Flat Cats, a swing jazz band that performs all around the Chicagoland area.

Brian Quinlan - Guitar, Bass, Ukulele - Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday

Brian Quinlan is a guitarist from Western Springs, IL who plays many styles including jazz, rock, classical, and gospel. He gigs regularly in the Chicago area and has international touring experience. In 2015, he earned his B.M. degree in Jazz Studies from Northern Illinois University, where he studied with Fareed Haque. Since 2009, he has taught private lessons to students ages 6 - 75, and everywhere in between. His teaching philosophy is quite straightforward in that playing music the students love and having fun is always the focus. Guitar fundamentals such as fretboard knowledge, scales, chords, etc. are also taught to further the understanding of the music being played. More advanced skills are optional and depend on the student. For example, reading music is optional but may be crucial depending on the music the student is interested in. Stylistic flexibility and an understanding/shaping of the students' unique personal goals are at the core of his approach.

Lesson Policies

Tuition & Schedule

There are two options for tuition and schedule:

Recurring Weekly Lessons: The monthly tuition for regular recurring lessons at UJM is $94 per month for weekly half hour lessons and $188 per month for weekly hour lessons. Tuition is paid on the first of each month via auto-pay on a debit or credit card. Lessons are scheduled on a month-to-month basis and may be cancelled at any time. No refunds are given on lesson payments.

Floating Lessons: You choose specific days and times, but not on a regular recurring basis. Payment for the lesson(s) is due at scheduling. The rate is $29 per half hour lesson.

Students are expected to attend all lessons. Tuition is paid to reserve a guaranteed space and teacher for a specific time each week. Therefore, each month's tuition must be paid regardless of a student's attendance. If your regular teacher is unable to teach a lesson a qualified substitute will be provided. In the case that a substitute is unavailable the lessons will be rescheduled.

Student Responsibilities

We ask that students of Uncle Jon's Music do the following:

  • Arrive at lessons on time. Students who arrive late do not receive the benefits of a full lesson.
  • Practice!  Set aside a regular practice time each day and stick to it.
  • Have fun making music! Keep a positive attitude and always strive to do your best work. Share your talents with your family and friends.
Parent Responsibilities

The parent's attitude and involvement is vital to their child's success in music. It is important that your children practice, without interruption, and attend their lessons on a regular basis. Good habits encourage success and well-placed praise helps them continue.

Through regular practice, children learn valuable lessons in perseverance, self-discipline and time management. If your child encounters difficulties in learning or practicing, please let your instructor know. Communication is very important, and the instructors want to help their students and parents.

Encourage your child to participate in general music classes, choir, band, or orchestra at school. This is a wonderful opportunity for them to sharpen their musical skills and learn to work with others. Expand your child's interest in music by attending quality musical events with your family and listening to recordings at home. Encourage your child to perform often and to make music with others whenever possible. Give them sincere and frequent praise.
